BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES), a provider of integrated performance analysis software and consulting services for sustainable building design and operation, today announced the successful implementation of its performance analysis software during the design process of Colorado State University’s Engineering II building. Using IES VE-Pro software, engineers modelled daylight, airflow and mixed-mode ventilation for the new energy efficient, three-story covered atrium.
University officials sought an atrium that maximized natural daylight, views and ventilation while reducing carbon output and energy consumption. Engineers from Ambient Energy, a consulting and engineering firm specializing in sustainable technologies and building, were faced with meeting these requirements while adhering to a stringent temperature comfort range – one that could not exceed 77 degrees Fahrenheit or drop below 66 degrees Fahrenheit.

“IES helped us with the bottom line – a low carbon, highly efficient, well performing building,” said Linda Morrison, Building Performance Engineer at Ambient Energy. “VE-Pro is one of the only tools that can provide integrated daylight, thermal and mixed-mode ventilation analysis in great detail, which allowed us to test the integration of all components across the year.”
Simulations led engineers to install skylights and automatically controlled operable windows to regulate temperature. Tests confirmed that natural ventilation provided effective cooling driven by pressure-induced airflow on all three floors during warmer months (March through October), significantly reducing energy consumption associated with air conditioning. Ambient Energy integrated information from Autodesk Revit into IES to achieve optimal results.

“We had a completely successful import into IESVE, which shows it’s very attainable to do this process with the Building Information Modelling benefits,” Morrison said.
“This type of integrated modelling process takes the guesswork out of energy efficient building,” said Don McLean, Founder and CEO of IES. “Ambient Energy engineers conceptualized and verified their efficiency ideas using the software, before even beginning the actual construction of the project. When you are armed with this knowledge, you can drive sustainability throughout all phases of the design process.”
